Assistant Legal Counsel For House Republican Caucus
 
The Office of House Republican Leader Jim Durkin is seeking a lawyer to join the current legal team. The lawyer will be responsible for writing and analyzing legislation, staffing legislative committees, legal research, and working with legislators and staff on different legal issues that may arise throughout the year. The lawyer will work closely with the legislators that make up the House Republican Caucus, as well as lobbyists and advocates, in the course of their duties. It is a Springfield based position.
 
Responsibilities and Duties –

  • Write and analyze legislation assigned to you by the Director of Research and the Chief Legal Counsel.

  • Be responsible for all legislation in your assigned issue areas.

  • Work closely with the other legislative caucuses to ensure the most accurate information is included in your bill analysis.

  • Staff committees assigned to you by the Director of Research.

  • Be responsible for informing the Spokesperson for your committees of all relevant information and background on the bills in your committees.

  • Create one-page summaries of key bills.

  • Write end of session summaries of key legislation for the end of session book.

  • Legal research and projects as assigned by the House Republican Leader, Chief of Staff, Chief Legal Counsel, or other staff members.

 
Qualifications and Skills –
 

  • Juris Doctor is required

  • Licensed to practice law in any State in the Union (preferably in Illinois)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong organizational abilities
