2023 National Health Law Moot Court Competition - 11/3 & 11/4

The Southern Illinois University School of Law, together with the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Health Law Association are pleased to announce the thirty-first annual National Health Law Moot Court Competition on Friday, November 3, and Saturday, November 4, 2023, to be held here in Carbondale.  The NHLMC Competition has over the years been recognized as one of the most outstanding national moot court events, attracting teams and judges from all over the country.  Our national reputation for presenting a great competition is in large part because we have been able to count on the support of members of the bar like you.

This year we have 26 teams from 18 law schools. The problem this year involves a child who is suing a fertility doctor for surreptitiously substituting his sperm for that of the child’s father, and a doctor who is trying to remove the child’s claim to bankruptcy court.  We once again expect the fact pattern to generate lively courtroom debate.  It is also Professor Anderson’s last year directing the competition, as she is retiring in January, and we hope to give her a great send-off!

We cannot do this without you!  We would be honored if you would agree to serve as a judge during the Competition.  We typically need the most judges for the preliminary rounds all-day on November 3 and the octofinal rounds at 9:30 a.m. on November 4, but ask you to consider signing up for any times you can make yourself available.  Depending on your travel time, you may also be eligible for overnight accommodations on Friday evening.  You also may be able to earn MCLE credits.*

If you are able to assist us by serving as a judge in one or more rounds, please respond by completing this form no later than October 5.  We ask that you hold the times you select until we can confirm the specific rounds for which you are scheduled, as it usually takes a while to finalize all of the open slots. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Moot Court Board Judge Coordinator Dakotah Hubler at mootct@siu.edu or call 618-453-3114.  We thank you in advance for your assistance with this event.

Please note that if you have already signed up based on our earlier solicitation email, you do not need to do so again.

We hope to see you in November!

* Please keep in mind if you judged a round in the SIU Intramural Competition in September, you can receive one-half credit for a repeat session in the Health Law Competition.  If you judged two rounds in the Intramural Competition, there is no additional credit for judging in the Health Law Competition.  We will provide you with an Illinois MCLE certificate after the competition is complete.

Sincerely,
