The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism has approved the substance of A Discussion of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Leadership in Turbulent Times for 1.50 hours (Illinois) professional responsibility credit.
This session will include a discussion of Doris Kearns’ Goodwin’s Leadership In Turbulent Times, a seminal work that analyzes the leadership traits of four U.S. Presidents, including three who had legal training. The presentation will discuss leadership traits exhibited by these Presidents, and how practicing attorneys can incorporate these leadership lessons in their own practices. Key to this discussion will be issues related to professionalism, diversity and inclusion, and civility, and how practicing attorneys can apply these concepts in their practices.
Presented by:
Greg Miarecki holds an undergraduate degree in Public Policy and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago. Currently, he serves as the Executive Assistant Dean for Career Planning and Professional Development at the University of Illinois College of Law. He also serves as the Director of the College of Law’s Leadership Project, a new program designed to teach leadership skills to students and to promote debate and discussion about leadership in the legal profession. Prior to his academic roles, Greg was a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP in Chicago, where he focused on complex commercial and white-collar criminal litigation.
Lee Reichert holds an undergraduate degree in History and Political Science from Colgate University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law. Currently, Lee is the Chief Legal & Government Affairs Officer at MolsonCoors Beverage Company. In this capacity, Lee oversees the legal, government affairs, governance, risk management, sustainability, communications, securities reporting, ethics & compliance, insurance, real estate, water, facilities and security functions for MolsonCoors. Prior his current role, Lee practiced with Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago and Lathrop Gage in Denver, Colorado. At Lathrop Gage, Lee led the corporate and securities department of the firm’s Colorado offices, and served on the firm’s Executive Committee.
Ajay Shah holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law. the CEO of Globetrotters Engineering Corporation. Ajay became CEO in August of 2017 after having worked as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of the Corporation for several years. As CEO, Ajay provides strategic vision and leadership in execution of the firm’s goals. Ajay serves on the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness and the Board of Managers of the Chicago Bar Association.
The Honorable Debra Walker holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois. Currently, Judge Walker sits in the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, where she hears disputes pertaining to custody, visitation, property division, maintenance, child support, and domestic violence. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Walker was a partner with Clausen Miller, P.C. where she specialized in defending professionals sued for malpractice. Judge Walker has extensive leadership experience in the legal profession. From 2012 to 2018, Judge Walker served on the Access to Justice Commission by appointment of the Illinois Supreme Court. She also served on the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism from 2005 through 2020 and was Commission Chair from 2012 to 2018. She is the Immediate Past President of the Illinois Judges Foundation Board of Directors, as well as a Past President of the Illinois Bar Foundation, the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois, and the North Michigan Avenue Business & Professional Women’s Network. Judge Walker currently serves on the University of Illinois Moms Association Board of Directors and the Dean’s Advisory Board of the University of Illinois College of Law.

The University of Illinois College of Law’s Leadership Project, launched in January of 2021, is designed to focus on the development of future leaders in the legal profession and thereby fundamentally impact the legal profession of the future. This program harnesses the expertise of current leaders and scholars while creating opportunities for discussion and debate on the topic of leadership and the law. Preparedness for the legal profession requires not only knowledge of the law but the skills and willingness to take on leadership roles. Today’s legal profession involves interaction with a complex set of legal issues, people, and relationships, and accordingly requires lawyers to develop and utilize strong leadership and management skills.
