NOTICE OF VACANCY

Position: McLean County Public Defender
Location: Bloomington, IL
FY 2021 Salary: $161,064.15

POSITION OVERVIEW: Under judicial and executive direction, plans, directs, and provides administrative oversight of the activities of Public Defender’s Office for McLean County. Responsibilities also include preparing the annual office budget; hiring and evaluating professional staff; preparing grant applications and overseeing grant activities; and performing complex defense litigation cases. Work activities include serving on numerous county government committees, representing the office on the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council Executive Committee, and reporting monthly to the Judicial Oversight Committee of the County Board. Considerable professional and managerial independence, discretion, judgment, and latitude are applied in carrying out responsibilities of the position. Inherent in the work is the requirement of considerable tact and coordination with the court, other justice system departments, law enforcement agencies, other governmental agencies, private organizations, and the public. Work is reviewed by the Chief Circuit Judge for results in achieving departmental goals and objectives, and conformance to professional legal principles and practices, and the laws of the State of Illinois. Budgeting and financial auditing are reviewed by the appropriate subcommittee of the McLean County Board.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This is a supervisory/management job classification, providing oversight and direction to professional legal and office support staff [fourteen (14) full-time attorneys; seven (7) support staff; and six (6) contract attorneys].

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from an accredited law school; and substantial experience in preparing and trying cases before the courts, including experience as a lead or supervisory attorney; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois.
