Herman George Bodewes Obituary

Herman G. Bodewes, 87, of Springfield, died on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at his home.

He was born on July 25, 1937, in Lemay, MO, the son of Theodore and Meta (Rind) Bodewes. Herman married Carolyn Sue Brown on August 3, 1963, in Farmersville, IL.

Herman attended St. Libory Elementary School and graduated from the Cathedral High School in Belleville with the class of 1955. He went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University in 1964. Herman was a partner at the law firm of Giffin, Winning, Cohen & Bodewes for 58 years. He approached every case with the same unwavering dedication, regardless of the client's financial status, social standing, or the nature of the case. Throughout his prominent legal career, he received many awards from various organizations. He was an active, longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. Herman enjoyed gardening, the Chicago Cubs, political campaigns, and travel. His greatest joy was spending time on his farm with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Bernard Bodewes.

Herman is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bodewes of Springfield; daughters, Ann (Mike) Stephens of St. Louis, MO, Christine Bodewes of Nairobi, Kenya, and Karen (Kate Kent) Bodewes of Springfield; sons, Joe (Molly) Bodewes of Durango, CO, Ted Bodewes of Berwyn, IL, and Andrew (Nicole Livanos) Bodewes of Naperville, IL; grandchildren, Will Bodewes, Truman Stephens, Luke Bodewes, Mitchell (Clare) Stephens, Noah Bodewes, Meta Stephens, Kristina Bodewes, and Lana Bodewes; great-grandchild, Dominic Stephens; brother, Paul Bodewes of Mascoutah, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A Prayer Service will begin at 3:00 PM with Rev. Jeff Grant officiating.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 AM on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with Rev. Jeff Grant officiating.

A private burial will take place at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Farmersville.
